EXPERIENCE. PURPOSE. COMMUNITY.

The Puzzle was designed to intricately satisfy experience, purpose, and community conceptually. All of which are critical pieces to a library.

Experience: by combining typical spaces with logistical concepts, the experience provided at The Puzzle is intentional

Purpose: the spaces within The Puzzle are efficient, providing patrons with a simplified program

Community: The Puzzle provides patrons with many opportunities for community engagement whether intentionally seeking it out or not

CHILDREN’S AREA | noisy

A large part of the final assignment was to understand the benefits and utilize Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) in the library design, whether it be for the physical structure or cosmetic use. Since The Puzzle’s program was greatly dependent on noise levels produced, the best use of CLT in this library design would be in the rooms of the building that had the capability of being noisy where it needs to be quiet. Which is the best explanation for why the children’s area, on level 2, needed CLT, as opposed to the makerspace on level 1

CONVENIENCE. EFFICIENCY. NATURE.

The Ternion Tower is a micro-housing apartment that blends convenience, efficiency, and nature seamlessly.

Convenience: since the location is in a deserted area in the city of Denver, the Tower supplies the residents with everything they might need daily

Efficiency: with the Tower being micro-housing, the apartment has used every square inch available to provide tenants with optimal usage

Nature: The Tower was designed with biophilia in mind, providing indoor-outdoor living and planter boxes on every balcony

TERNION TOWER PLAN VIEW

The concept for The Ternion Tower originated from an earlier assignment in the semester that focused on exploring positive, negative, & hybrid space. A mosaic of triangles was formed and navigated the design for The Tower. From there, it came down to the main requirements for the micro-housing assignment and finding a harmony between the triangular shape; the best solution for handling the micro-housing came down to three things: convenience, efficiency, and blending in natural elements to disband the concrete jungle of Denver, CO. For the harmony in the triangular shape, roofs and balconies followed suit, while a brise-soleil was created to help the overpowering sunshine and play into the triangles engulfing The Tower.

brise-soleil + roofplan

One of the most noteworthy parts of The Ternion Tower is the brise-soleil and roofplan. When designing The Tower, the property had a lot of sun exposure, and with the Denver climate, water collection in the winter months would need to travel somewhere. The idea for the roof shape, came from an ascot originally, and overtime it developed into an origami shape to direct the water into a tunnel on the side of the building that is masked with a brise-soleil. From the inside of The Tower, there are fun triangular shapes illuminated by the sunlight, while on the outside you can hear trickles of water into the pond right next to the entrance to create a serene patio area.

COLLABORATION. CONNECTION. INSPIRATION.

The Muse Mounds is an amphitheater and student center in the heart of campus fostering collaboration, connection, and inspiration.

Collaboration: inside the student center and around The Muse Mounds, there are endless opportunities for collaboration with peers

Connection: the building currently in this location causes an obstacle while walking through campus, so The Muse Mounds has an alternative route on top for scenic views and a faster route

Inspiration: whether watching a performance on the CASE building hill or working inside/around the center, one will be inspoired by their peers

planning + program

By conducting a frequently traveled paths study, it was evident, the highly trafficked routes were directly in front of The Muse Mounds location. It was discovered that most students were having to go around the building currently there in order to get to the other side

CONNECT the sides by elevated walkway to simplify travel

Utilize natural sunlight to INSPIRE time spent outside

By conducting a sun path study, it was discovered that the sun would perfectly surround The Muse Mounds location providing natural sunlight all day long. This was a huge factor when determining the position of the building, as well creating the brise-soleils and over-extending rooflines

The shape for The Muse Mounds originated from playing on grass mounds at the Aspen Art Institute. From there, the curves were manipulated to form The Muse Mounds figure

introduction to bim - revit

ENVD2352 was an introductory course into the Revit software. In this course, we completed in-depth technical drawings including: sections, detailed sections, elevations, floorplans, and 3D views within Revit. We learned how to recreate drawings from construction documents, building furniture, importing models from Rhino, and creating our own additions to a building on campus

ENVD3100: INTERMEDIATE ARCHITECTURE

ENVD3100 was the fourth installment of studio architecture courses. This studio focused on creating a mobile library, which turned into a library branch project: “The Puzzle”. In this course we learned about Cross-Laminated Timber, and the benefits of using it in construction. We were able to take three different field trips to stregthen our understanding: we toured the new BPL branch being built in North Boulder, CO, the BPL in downtown Boulder, CO, and visited the construction of a Civic Building that is utilizing CLT.

DDES1073: DRAWING FOR DESIGN

DDES1073 was a course focused on strengthening drawing for design including sketching and using different art mediums. This course facilitated creativity by assigning various prompts and requiring exploration in materials and tools. This course required concept development for each assignment as it focused on creating an ulterior story within the art itself.

ENVD1002,1012, 1022: TECHNIQUES + TECNOLOGY

ENVD1002, 1012, AND 1022 are the foundational courses necessary to develop and strengthen design skills. In these three courses, we learned how to create technical drawings, use Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, took a crash course on Autocad, learned Rhino 7, and we transfered our Rhino skills into laser cutting

ENVD3150: PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION FOR DESIGN

ENVD3150 is a course intended to coach students through communicating and presenting professionally in the design world. In this course, we developed a project from the initial meeting with a client all the way until we pitched our final ideas to our client. We learned how to effectively collaborate as a team, create a company and client brand for better representation, communicate professionally with clients, design for specific client needs, and present concisely to clients
